Poll: PID pushes for testing for hereditary well accepted

The desire for a certain eye or hair color does not justify genetic testing to select embryos that are created through artificial insemination - the suspicion of a serious hereditary disease may have. This allows the result of a recent representative survey of the "Apothekenumschau" about German attitudes to the so-called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) can be summarized. Accordingly, it has still almost one in five (18.7 percent) for "perfectly fine" when couples advance that could have also naturally children, using artificial insemination and genetic selection such as determining the sex of their children would. On closer examination, however, only 14.7 percent of respondents are in favor of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to allow in principle. Almost one in two (43.5 percent) believes that the PID only in exceptional cases, such as there is reasonable suspicion of possible hereditary diseases should be allowed. 15.6 percent decline from the PID general, 26.2 per cent have not yet formed an opinion on this. 70.2 percent would support after planting of the embryo in the uterus during artificial insemination at a malformation or genetic disease but also an abortion. Read the focus of the current "Apothekenumschau" (September B), which experts put forward for and against PGD.

Background:

case of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) are usually several eggs fertilized. In a test tube formed multicellular embryos. They will be screened genetically before planting in the uterus. Only suitable embryos are selected, the others die off. Critics see this as a choice between "for life" and "living". The method is therefore ethically controversial. So far, the preimplantation genetic diagnosis in Germany was regarded as forbidden. This has changed by a ruling of the Federal Court (BGH) in July. Accordingly, in cases with very high genetic risk, the PID is no longer punishable.
