"Airports are windows to the soul of a country". For people who travel, airports are like a temporary oasis after a long plane trip. Its so much as the first impression to a country like the facade of your home that gives the visitor an impression of the owner.
The most beautiful airports in the world are mostly in Asia in fact 3 of the world best airports namely HK, Singapore's Changi and Korea's Incheon Airports have always occupied the top 3 slots in the Airport of the Worlds awards. I am just blessed to have travelled extensively because of hubbys job and my penchant for budget travelling when we were still living in Singapore. Here are some of the aiports we have passed through and my impressions of some of them.
HK International AirportHK Airport has consistently been voted as the best airport in the world together with Singapore's Changi airport. Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is located less than five flying hours from half of the world's population and is the third busiest International passenger airport in the world.I have transitted several times in this airport on my way to the US and the shopping is great but this is a big airport which means that you need enough layover time to go around and shop.
Changi(SINGAPORE) AirportI love this airport! This is one airport you wont mind having a layover. Excellent airport with lots to do if you have a delay or are in transit. It has a hotel inside the airport, a swimming pool, movie theatre, several shops and restaurants. Its like you are in a shopping mall.
London Heathrow AirportThe airport was very clean but Terminal 4 arrival is quite far from the other Terminals. Immigration was long despite efforts to ease up incoming passengers due to the Olympics.I was expecting a modern terminal(Terminal 5) but we landed in Terminal 4 which was a bit old.
TOKYO'S Narita AirportThis is another airport that I am very familiar with having travelled to Japan five times and having it as my transit airport when travelling to the US. What I love in this airport are the souvenir shops specially those selling Japanese moji rice cakes and their Muji store.
PARIS Charles De Gaulle Airport
This is another huge disorganized airport. It also takes a lot of going around in circles just going from one terminal to the other. If you plan to take the train to downtown Paris, you must be ready with Euro coins to use in the vending machines that sell train tickets otherwise you will have to queue up with other tourists just to use your credit card to buy train tickets to travel to the city.
Suvarnabhumi Airport BANGKOKArchitecturally it is a beautiful airport and I should also remark that the direct train to the city is fast and cheap. It also has a lot of local and international brand shops and restaurants in both the departure and arrival areas. This is one of the busiest airports in Asia and oftentimes queues to immigrations is quite long.
TAiwan International AirportAttractive, modern airport but no place you want to spend time between planes. Lots of shops but very poor selection of food and no place to buy a drink, unless you're a member of an airline club.Transportation facilities to downtown Taipei are readily available. It is a big airport but never crowded.
Saigon International AirportWe were surprised to arrive to a spacious, airy and clean airport. I thought Vietnam would have an old airport but on the contrary ,it was spacious and spankingly new.Immigrations and Customs clearance was fast. However duty free shops dont carry interesting merchandise.
Los Angeles Airportis the sixth busiest airport in the world and third in the United States, One description to it is topsy turvy.
Phnom Penh Airport CAMBODIAThis is one of the airports that has benefited from the surge of tourism in Cambodia. The airport is new but a bit disorganised.
DOMESTIC AIRPORTSPhuket Airport ThailandThis airport is very easy to get in and out if you are flying locally inside Thailand. You can be off your plane and in your car and on the road in five to seven minutes tops. And, at what other international airport can you park your car for about US$1.25 per day? And it has been renovated to cope with Thailand burgeoning tourism.
Siem Reap International Airport CAMBODIAWell built, small airport and very clean. Close to town. Easy check in when you depart and easy customs checks when you arrive. You have to pay $25USD departure tax which some passengers complain about, but I guess thats how they are maintaining this small airport with a huge influx of tourists visiting Angkor Wat.
Macau International Airport This airport is small but efficient. Clearance to customs and immigrations is fast and you can easily get to the center of Macau within minutes. The departure area has some small duty free stores.
LOW COST AIRPORT TERMINALS SINGAPORE Low Cost TerminalDespite it being small , it is a properly laid out terminal but you need to walk quite a distance to your plane which is quite difficult specially if its raining or if you are carrying heavy hand carried items. It services only budget airlines .However this terminal will be closed and transferred to Changi Terminal 2 making way for a brand new terminal.Thats how fast Singapore remodels their airports. This airport just opened in 2006 and will close in Sept 2012(which is about 6 years in operations).
Johor Bahru Senai Airport Being a domestic airport, this is a small compact airport that is basically used for domestic flights from Kuala Lumpur. There are expansion plans that remain as just plans since no construction is being undertaken to expand this airport.
Kuala Lumpur Low Cost TerminalThis airport is too crowded and too noisy. It is probably the worst airport I have gone to but it is the hub of Air Asia, the worlds best low cost airline .We often use this as transit to other Asian countries since Kuala Lumpur is Air Asia's central hub.
